How to Identify Nigerian Road Signs
Road signs are drawings/ markings on flat surfaces at strategic places on the roads to direct drivers and pedestrians.
Drivers must understand every road sign to avoid accidents involving other drivers and pedestrians they indicate traffic rules, construction areas, speed limits, distance, etc.
Nigerian road signs are divided into these categories:
Warning Signs
As the name implies, these signs are signals to drivers and pedestrians of something that they should be cautious of. They come in the shape of a triangle with red and white as their colors.
Regulatory signs
As you guessed, regulatory signs that direct the movement of drivers and pedestrians and let them know what they can or cannot do on that particular road. They can be prohibitive and mandatory.
Informative signs
These signs provide guiding information to drivers and pedestrians about their location, landmarks, speed limits, directions, and more.
Road Markings
This is created with paint and used with other traffic or road signs for double reinforcement. Road markings come in these ways:
Yellow lines
This line means drivers should move in opposite directions so if it is a two-way highway, it comes in these ways:
Broken yellow line: A broken yellow line indicates a two-direction passing zone so persons in either direction can move with caution if the road ahead is clear.
Broken and straight yellow line: Drivers driving adjacent to the broken line can pass other drivers with care while drivers who are adjacent to the solid line cannot pass.
Double straight yellow lines: Road users from either side of the two lines cannot pass.
White lines
Here there is a separation in the different lanes that are moving in the same direction. Therefore, they come in these ways:
Dotted white lines: Separates a through lane from a deceleration or acceleration lane. So if a through lane becomes a mandatory exit or turning road, this applies.
Double white lines: A double white line is a demarcation that shows the different lanes therefore, drivers must not switch lanes for any reason.
Broken white lines: An indication of lanes where drivers can switch lanes as they desire.
Solid white lines: Solid white lines lets drivers know that they are to drive within the confinements of the lane that they already occupy.
Finally, remember to report drivers who disregard these traffic signs on Whistle to get cash or social rewards.
