In Nigeria and other parts of West Africa, there is an end-of-the-year weather/season called Harmattan. Harmattan makes the air cold, dry, and full of dust particles. This makes visibility difficult, especially while driving.

With about eight weeks to conclude the year, the Harmattan weather/season has started to creep in slowly. Driving during this time can be tricky to navigate. However, you can with precautions. Here are some tips for driving during Harmattan:

  • Reduce Speed

Dust reduces visibility, so slow down to give yourself more time to react to any obstacles or changes in the road.

  • Increase the Following Distance

Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. This gives you a better chance to react if they suddenly slow down or encounter an obstacle.

  • Use Headlights

Turn on your headlights, even during the day. This not only helps you see better but also makes your vehicle more visible to others.

  • Pull Over if Visibility is Too Low

If the dust is so thick that you can’t see the road ahead, consider pulling over and waiting for conditions to improve. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

  • Use Air Filters

Make sure your vehicle’s air filters are in good condition. This can help prevent dust from entering your engine and compromising performance.

  • Close Windows and Vents

Keep your windows and vents closed to minimize the amount of dust entering the vehicle. Use the recirculation setting on your air conditioner to keep the inside air cleaner.

  • Drive in the Center of the Road

If it’s safe, drive in the center of the road. The wheel tracks tend to have less loose dust compared to the edges.

  • Be Cautious of Other Vehicles

Dust can make it difficult to see other drivers, so stay vigilant. Use your mirrors frequently and be aware of the movements of vehicles around you.

  • Stay Informed

Check weather reports and road conditions before you start your journey. If dusty conditions are expected, plan accordingly or consider delaying your trip.

  • Be Prepared for Reduced Traction

Dust on the road can make it slippery. Avoid sudden movements or sharp turns, and be gentle on the brakes to prevent skidding.

Patience is key when driving during Harmattan. Be alert, go slowly, and you’ll navigate the dust with ease. Remember to download Whistle on your phone to report your road experiences on Lagos roads during these times.
